Windows 7 RC Upgrade
Windows 7 RC (Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate) is expected to be released very shortly and once it is released there will be many people wanting to know how to upgrade from Microsoft Windows 7 beta to Microsoft Windows 7 RC. Microsoft have released a few statements on how to upgrade your operating system from Windows 7 beta to Windows 7 RC, but with no magic way of upgrading so today we are going to explain your options.
Long story short Microsoft Windows 7 developers have even suggested you will be better off to just do a clean install. Anyway here are a few to things to keep in mind when upgrading or installing a new operating system.
Please first and foremost make sure to save your important work files, documents, multimedia files and or customizations to a storage device such as another hard drive, usb stick or you can even burn a cd/dvd. You are able to use Windows 7 Easy Transfer tool, this backup tool is a new backup tool included with Windows 7. Microsoft have added a few words of caution about using this tool when backing up from Windows 7 beta, as the code may change with the new builds there is no guarantee that this will be a 100% safe method to back up for now. My preferred method of back up is to burn a dvd ( Remember to always test the cd /dvd straight away, just in case it turns out to be a frizbee).
So as we are going to do a fresh install and then import your old settings over here is what you need to do.
- Download Windows 7 RC, burn the ISO to DVD.
- Format the Partition that you will be using for Windows 7.
- Install Windows 7 on the freshly formatted partition.
- Run the Windows 7 Easy Transfer app and Import what you backup up earlier.
- Re-Install all your other 3rd party apps / software.
- Restore the 3rd party data that you back up earlier (you will have to do this manually)
The above pointers are there to help you, We are gathering that you are either upgrading from Windows 7 beta, or just installing Windows 7 RC for the first time. All in all this is pretty simple to achieve even if you have never installed an OS (Operating System) before, you really should not have any issues installing Windows 7. Quite a pity that Microsoft have not made a little more effort to make it easier for people already using Windows 7 beta to upgrade to the latest release candidate but we kind of assumed this would be the case anyhow. Once the retail version of Microsoft Windows 7 is released upgrading / updating will be a much easier process.

Cool tip! I didn’t even know about the Easy Transfer tool… probably a carry-over from the FAST (Files and Settings Transfer wizard) in XP. I’ll have to give that a try when RC finally comes out…
